Jasmyne's Speech from the Graduation: Before I begin I would like to congratulate each and every one of my fellow graduates on finally reaching the light at the end of a very long and challenging tunnel. We have all worked hard to achieve graduation and it is well deserved. So congratulations! Thank you also to the families and friends of our graduates for being here with us tonight to celebrate and honour our achievements. I would like to acknowledge and express my gratitude towards the Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, The Honourable Dr Hendy Cowan, Vice Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, Professor Kerry Cox and also to our many distinguished guests here tonight. Speaking on behalf of all the graduates of 2007 is no easy task, but I think it’s safe to say that most of us have viewed university life as a love-hate relationship. There have definitely been highs and lows. The highs- most of which have been in the form of mid-semester breaks, and of course not forgetting the wealth of knowledge we have gained, have kept us coming back for more year after year. The lows, including exam time have equipped us with the skills to deal with the many stressors of life and have made us better people. Perhaps the biggest achievement for most of us, apart from graduation of course, is being given the opportunity to meet and befriend so many wonderful people. This includes our fellow peers, who are without doubt the biggest support, especially in their uncanny ability to create handy rhymes and hints to help us to remember values and figures. This has more than once brought an unexpected smile to my face during the middle of an exam! The friends I have made during the course of my degree I consider to be lifelong friends and for this I am forever grateful. Our lecturers, what can I say, we couldn’t have done this without you! Thank you for sharing your time, and seemingly endless knowledge with us! You are the foundations of our newly formed careers. Thanks for the constant encouragement and reality checks which have given us the confidence to step out into the real world. Every single day over the past month I have had my knowledge and skills tested and re-tested, scrutinized and assessed as a new graduate of the physically and emotionally draining world of nursing. Despite this I can honestly say that I have gone home, almost every day, feeling happy and proud of my achievements. I feel secure in saying that ECU southwest has a knack of producing graduates which are highly sought after and confident in their own abilities creating employees that perform well in their chosen careers. Perhaps this stems from the supportive community created by being a smaller campus in addition to an array of outstanding staff and resources. Whatever the reason, ECU southwest has proven to be a great place to study. It has allowed us to pursue our dreams and has given us endless opportunities for learning. Easily the biggest highlight of my time at ECU was being given the opportunity to travel to Thailand during which I experienced a major culture shock as well as gaining an invaluable insight into the Thai health system and nursing practices. Without the support and funding of ECU I may never have been given the chance to develop such cultural awareness and appreciation for what we have here in Australia. I hope that Bunbury will continue to provide such opportunities to their students within every faculty as my experience has undoubtedly made me a better nurse. So, at the end of the day, I feel extremely proud and honoured to be able to call myself, not only an ECU graduate, but also a professional as a result of three shorts years that have made a lifetime of difference. Thankyou! Please note that email is the preferred method of contact for all correspondence. |
